TRIBAL EVENTS

The Buena Vista Tribe is dedicated to carrying their ancestors’ traditions. One of the ways to do that is through gatherings. It is a powerful and positive energy when you can get Native People together. Therefore, we have begun to create our own gatherings to share with, not only our Tribe, but anyone who wants to participate. Below are some of our events which we have adopted as becoming annual events.

Land Blessing, April 2005

This event was held in the spring as a symbol of new beginnings for the Tribe and our land. Corbin Harney, a Shoshone Spiritual healer and leader, honored the Tribe with leading this blessing. Corbin is well respected throughout Indian Country. He practices and teaches the traditional ways of caring for Mother Earth. His efforts extend world wide. Photos>

Memorial Day Comeback!
After nearly 30 years, the Memorial Day Gathering was resurrected. Louis and Annie Oliver were the original hosts to this gathering, where not only Me-Wuk, Miwok and Mi-Wuk, but other Tribes came together. People would come from all areas to participate and socialize at this gathering. Louis carried on this tradition from his father, Casus Oliver. We have adopted this as an annual gathering.

Fall Festival, November 2005
On this day we honor the Elders. At this event, young Tribal members serve the Elders a home-cooked meal. This event is to not only honor the Elders, but to teach the younger generation the respect deserved to their Elders. The knowledge comes from our Elders and bringing both Elders and children together bridges that gap. The day winds down with a full stomach and a game of bingo! We have adopted this as an annual gathering. Photos>

Children’s Christmas Party, December 2005
The Tribe hosted its first Christmas Party and it was a success. There were nearly 200 people in attendance! We wanted to make sure that children do not go without having a Christmas. We stuffed stockings with toys and handed them out to all of the children. We had Santa and a picture to send home with each child. We served pizza and soft drinks, and had a pop corn machine. For entertainment we had a pot belly pig! Photos>

The Buena Vista Rancheria has been involved in other Tribal events including:
