ABOUT THE TRAINING

- WHAT IS CULTURAL MONITORING?

Cultural Resource Monitoring is conducted by Cultural Monitors to insure that aboriginal and historical cultural materials are preserved and protected. The process of cultural monitoring helps to identify and determine the presence of Cultural resources in areas under development / construction.

Through the Cultural monitoring process, the monitors put in place mitigation measures to avert any adverse impacts that may result from development projects which involve ground disturbing work (moving dirt).

Buena Vista Rancheria

CULTURAL MONITORING TRAINING 2011

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THIS TRAINING?

The Buena Vista Rancheria is hosting the Cultural Monitoring Training program as an introductory course for Native Americans and anyone interested in learning about and maintaining the cultural integrity of their land and community resources. Full training participants in this program will receive a Certificate of Participation and Completion. (Participants must attend all 5 days to receive a certificate) Representatives will offer information for those who may wish to pursue a Native American Monitor status.

The Native American Monitor is a liaison between Federal/state/public/county agencies and the local Native American community, with whom these entities may contract on a project-by-project basis. The Monitor participates and obtains firsthand knowledge of archaeological excavations and construction in areas (as agreed upon in consultation) that are known to have cultural sensitivity or have the potential for cultural sensitivity. The Native American Monitor should be knowledgeable about his or her culture and its traditions, and be familiar with archaeological practices, as well as federal and state laws and regulations regarding Native American cultural concerns.
